Duchess Bake Shop

Back in 2009 when Duchess first opened I was one of the lucky ones to try what these guys had to offer first.

My mom surprised us one day at a family gathering when she brought out a bunch of white pastry boxes and bags that I had never seen before. We all peeked and ooed and aaahhhed at the all the french pastries. We had never seen any of these type of pastries around Edmonton. Luckily, she bought a Duchess and the sight of it came with mixed reviews. What was that green half dome shaped cake. Marzipan? Weird. What was inside? Cake, buttercream, mousse...? None of us were sure as we eagerly cut up our first slice. This cake was devilishly delicious, light and airy, yet sweet and soft. We all loved it!

Thank goodness my mother found this place. Apparently she worked with a lady whose son had opened up Duchess with some friends and she had been bragging about it to my mom. I guess I come from a blood line of Bakery lovers since my mother went there as soon as she could and brought home all these goodies. Ever since then there is always one thing I come back to this place for and it is the best one, ever (okay I haven't been everywhere, but I have been to a lot of bakeries around the world)....their  brownie!

After I got to try the goodies my mom bought here it took me a few years to become a regular at Duchess, but when I did I am proud to say that I have eaten almost everything they sell.

So what's good here? Who sells the best brownie I have ever had, time and time again with not even a hint of disappointment? Duchess. Soft, sweet, gooey, crunchy, chocolaty and better than you know what. Yeah. Totally.

Other things they sell at Duchess are Macarons, pies (second favourite), tarts, croissants, eclairs, cookies, meringues, marshmallows, danish and galette (third favourite). They started a lunch menu as well a few years ago and offer quiche, sandwiches and soup. Plus a good selection of warm drinks.

There are chairs and tables to eat your goodies at and this place is usually quite busy if not overflowing with people. . This place is really good not only for its food, but also its service and cleanliness. If you've never been here I strongly recommend it.
